Ipswich Charioteers Celebrating 10 Years

SUFFOLK’S only wheelchair football club, the Charioteers Wheelchair FC, will be celebrating their 10th anniversary in style with a showcase event in Ipswich.

The club, which is run by Claire O'Brien-Ellington and her husband Simon, have been leading football provision for wheelchair users in Suffolk since they were founded in 2007.

The Charioteers provide football coaching sessions for a range of players, including both males and females of all ages and manual and power chair users. The award-winning club have been a focal point for wheelchair football within the region and continues to provide opportunities for players with various disabilities to enjoy the beautiful game.

In addition to delivering football training, the club are a registered charity who work tirelessly to raise funds for transport, and the equipment needed for their players to take part in football activity.

To celebrate a decade of football provision for wheelchair users, the club will be hosting a showcase event at their training ground, Inspire Suffolk.

The event aims to attract wheelchair users to the day to teach them some more about the club, wheelchair sports and how they can get involved with the Charioteers community. The event will take place on Saturday, November 25th from 12 noon until 4pm and is open for members of the public to attend.

Suffolk FA Football Development Manager Jodie Allard said: “It’s a fantastic achievement for the Charioteers to reach their ten-year anniversary, and we are looking forward to being a part of the celebrations which highlight the fantastic work they do to develop wheelchair football across East Anglia.

“As the only wheelchair football club in Suffolk, they play a vital role in ensuring that all people in the county can access regular football activity. I’m sure the event will be a big success and pave the way for the next ten years of delivering football to their club members.”

Club founder Claire O'Brien-Ellington added: “I can't believe that after all these years the club is still going even without a sponsor and I feel proud to be a joint founding member.

"We have seen a lot of members come through our club and go on to better life like one of our past members who went on to become a Paralympian.”
