International Referee Coach Visits Suffolk

SUFFOLK Referee Coaches were privileged to meet International UEFA Coach Peter Jones at the first Continued Personal Development Workshop of the...

Peter, who is a Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) Observer and Evaluator and UEFA Centre of Refereeing  (CORE) Coach, along with a number of various roles supporting the development of referees, provided a fantastic insight into how the role of the coach can aid the development of match officials.

It was also the first time that the Referee Observers joined the Coaches as the Observer, previously known as a Referee Assessor, becomes more of a coaching role following the introduction of the FA Referee Strategy.

A key message that Peter shared during his visit to Suffolk FA headquarters in Stowmarket on Monday was that the most important part of coaching is not to tell referees the answer, but to let them work it out for themselves.

Peter played a number of clips at contributory league level and engaged with the coaches sharing an insight into techniques they can use whilst they are coaching at the Referees Academy or within the Transition Group as well as the Observers supporting the development of the promotion candidates.

Suffolk FA Referee Development Officer Mary Harmer said: “We are extremely privileged to have Peter visit Suffolk and speak to our coaches and observers during his busy schedule.

“Peter is well experienced and has an in-depth of knowledge following his experiences with The FA and UEFA.

“On behalf of Suffolk FA and all those who attended, I would like to thank Peter for his time and his enthusiasm to deliver such a brilliant session.”

Suffolk FA provides referees who demonstrate potential with a Referee Coach in the Referee Academy Environment or via an invitation to join the Transition Group.

Similar to players, it is important referees can build positive relationships with their coach to enhance their development and achieve their goals whilst progressing along the referee pathway.
