Suffolk Prepares For Senior Cup Saturday

12:20 PM, Friday, 20 November 09. Suffolk FA Senior Cup

Saturday 21st November sees eight Suffolk FA Senior Cup Second Round matches take place across the county with all sixteen teams still in with a chance of winning the prestigious Trophy!

There was also plenty of entertainment as a whopping sixty one goals were scored and only four clean sheets kept from just fourteen First Round fixtures!

On top of all the goals scored, there were also plenty of shocks in Round One; last season's winners Beccles Town’s hopes of retaining the Cup were ended at the first hurdle by neighbours Corton, whilst Ridgeons League First Division sides Whitton United and Long Melford were both beaten by teams from the Suffolk & Ipswich League.

Round Two promises to be a cracker as two of the SIL Senior Division's current top four teams enter the competition following byes in the First Round.

Arguably the tie of the round sees Ridgeons League First Division outfit Team Bury host SIL Senior Division highflyers Ipswich Athletic.

Ipswich have scored in every one of their league games so far this season, with Dean Tournay-Godfrey netting 13 goals in 9 games. Team Bury endured a difficult start to the season but have won their last five league and cup matches and are bang in form. It may need extra-time and penalties to separate the two teams.

The highest placed team left in the competition is Brantham Athletic who travel to Ipswich Wanderers in Round Two.
Brantham, who currently sit 4th in the Ridgeons League First Division table, have David Grimwood and Oliver Mann to thank for the majority of their goals; the pair have scored a combined total of 24 goals from 23 games so far.

In contrast to the visitors, their opponents Ipswich Wanderers, who are lying down in 18th place in the same division, have just 3 wins from 14 games. Wanderers will hope to throw league form out of the window and use home advantage when the two teams meet under lights on Friday night.

The other Ridgeons League First Division team left in the hat is Stowmarket Town, who will make the journey to Ipswich to face Coplestonians from the SIL.

Stowmarket have only won two of their previous eight matches whilst Coplestonians have won just three of their previous nine. A win for either team could well kick-start their season into life.

There are three all-SIL fixtures, the first of which sees the most successful side in the history of the Suffolk FA Senior Cup, Grundisburgh, travel to Leiston St Margarets.

Compared with last season which saw Grundisburgh lift the SIL Senior Division title, things have not started particularly well in the league and they sit in mid-table. They have been scoring enough goals but have conceded too many at the other end and will hope for a clean sheet at Leiston St Margarets who are struggling near the foot of the table.

Felixstowe United and Capel Plough meet with Felixstowe currently sitting top of the SIL Senior Division with just two defeats in their thirteen league games to date. On the other hand Capel have been up and down with four wins, a draw and six defeats but when the two teams met earlier in the season it was 1-1.

The final all SIL-tie sees Westerfield United host Ransomes Sports. The two teams sit seventh and eighth respectively in the Senior Division table so this too promises to be a very even match.

Anglian Combination League side Corton pulled off a shock by dumping out the holders in Round One but their task doesn't get any easier as now face a tough trip to Woodbridge Athletic from the SIL.

Woodbridge Athletic have scored 26 goals in 12 league games so far as well as winning 6-1 against Brandon Town in Round One. Corton however will adopt the no-fear approach which served them so well last season when they reached the Semi-Finals.

The remaining tie sees Lakenheath from the Kershaw Premier League entertain SIL Senior Division new-boys Achilles. Lakenheath have struggled to recapture their form of last season and Achilles will be out to add the Senior Cup to the Suffolk FA Junior Cup which they won at Portman Road last year.

The Quarter-Final draw will take place Live on BBC Radio Suffolk on Saturday evening at 6:05pm during the half-time interval of Ipswich Town match against Sheffield Wednesday.
