Charter Standard Coaches Prepared for New Season

2:20 PM, Monday, 06 July 09. Club Development

Coaches from Charter Standard Clubs were invited to attend an In Service Training Event at St Albans Roman Catholic High School in Ipswich. The session was lead by FA Regional Coach Development Manager Peter Trevivian with the topic being, “Match Day Preparation”

Over 40 Coaches attended the event along with two Charter Standard teams, Whitton Sports Centre FC and Needham Market Phoenix Youth FC. Players from both teams represented their Clubs brilliantly with their excellent attitude and sportsmanship whilst playing some great football.

Throughout the session Peter concentrated on giving the players ownership, this was clear to see as soon as the session started as the players were given the freedom to lead on their own warm up. Players were also given the opportunity to make their own decisions throughout the match. It was made clear that it was important for players to learn from their mistakes in a positive environment. Peter also highlighted several times that the players can learn from each other and that Coaches and parents don’t need to shout and scream instructions from the touchline.

Many of the Coaches were impressed by the way the session was controlled with one person commenting, “The session was extremely well run, the tuition was extremely open minded and I will take many parts and elements of the coaching from this workshop”

The session incorporated the new FA Age Appropriate Coaching theory. The Age Appropriate Pathway has been brought out by the FA to further educate Coaches that specifically work with children. The first step of this Coaching Pathway is the FA Age Appropriate Introductory Module. This is a one day course which is due to take place at Cornard Sports Centre on the 25th July.

The course is aimed at coaches working with youth players and is the first of the new generation of courses using a player centred approach that gives coaches the tools to deliver football training and meet the learning needs of all players. This is the first step on the new age appropriate coaching pathway that leads to a UEFA B licence in coaching youth players.
